The amazing maps of Jedediah Hotchkiss helped Confederate officers plan military strategies. With their remarkable accuracy and detail, these maps played a major role in helping Stonewall Jackson achieve his many military successes in the Civil War. Now, for the first time, an exhibition is telling this mapmaker’s story. Jed Hotchkiss: Shenandoah Valley Mapmaker is on display at the MSV through May 10, 2009. This fascinating display includes sixty maps, sketches, and digital images from the Library of Congress, two Hotchkiss maps from the Stewart Bell Jr. Archives of Handley Regional Library, and several of the mapmaker’s instruments from the collection of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn one of the Civil War’s untold stories and see the maps of the Shenandoah Valley that remain without parallel today.

Learn more about the Hotchkiss maps and other cartographic treasures from the Library of Congress at the special lecture "Maps from the Library of Congress" on Friday, November 14, at 7 p.m. Part of the Museum's Galleries at Night series, the lecture is free to MSV Members. For all others, admission is $8 per person or $6 for senior/youth (7–18). Click here for more details.
